A full-time commitment, yet flexible: Tim from Kumon Gordon and Chatswood shares his experience
22 Jul 2021
While being a Kumon franchisee is a full-time role, flexibility is built into it. As business owners, franchisees manage their own schedules and workload. Tim Powell, franchisee of Kumon Gordon and Chatswood Education Centres in Sydney, describes his schedule as busy, but manageable and flexible. Across both centres, Tim runs classes four days per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Two of these days are full days, where four class timeslots are scheduled, and the other two are short days, with only two class timeslots. In terms of Tim’s typical working day, after dropping his children off to school in the mornings, Tim usually begins his centre preparation around lunchtime. This involves preparing student folders and conducting parent meetings. Tim also uses this time to complete other business tasks like tax, payroll, and monthly reporting. Class time for Tim usually begins at around 3pm and finishes at 5:30pm. He will then leave for home after packing down the classroom. “I think as a Kumon franchisee, you do need to be aware that there are activities you need to do outside of the class time”, Tim says. “But it's quite rewarding, and I've still got a lot of free time at the moment as well.” Tim also says that his previous professional experience helps him greatly in running his Kumon centres. “I think my operations management background has helped me with the activities I do outside of instructing”, he says. “For example, you need to employ staff, you need to follow processes as we're part of a franchise group, and you need to do a monthly reporting. We spend a fair amount of time outside of class time on those other activities.” To learn more about what is involved in being a Kumon franchisee, please register for an Information Meeting: [https://www.kumoninstructors.com.au/Franchise/Register.asp](https://www.kumoninstructors.com.au/Franchise/Register.asp) (AU) or [https://www.kumoninstructors.co.nz/Franchise/Register.asp](http://www.kumoninstructors.co.nz/Franchise/Register.asp) (NZ)
