As a Kumon franchisee, help your students to thrive
27 Oct 2022
Kumon franchisees in Australia and New Zealand equip students with self-learning. This empowers them to develop their own potential at school and in life. The skill of self-learning develops as students advance ahead of school grade level in the worksheets, where they learn for themselves what they are yet to be taught at school. As Kumon students encounter something new, they study the example, draw on previous learning and give it a try. They try, and try again, until they finally get it, sometimes with a hint from the Kumon franchisee. This is how Kumon develops self-learning. Students come to expect the challenge of something new, and gain satisfaction in working it out for themselves. They develop a mindset that no problem is too difficult to attempt. When Toru Kumon released the Kumon Method of Learning to the world in 1958, he believed that helping children to be able to self-learn was the core of Kumon’s mission. From his perspective, the fostering of sound, capable people is Kumon’s contribution to the global community. Kumon franchisees plan for their students to become self-learners from day one of enrolment. Study projections, regular communication and progress updates, record books, and the Kumon worksheets, are all part of a franchisees’ toolkit to develop their students. Franchisees are also supported by Kumon Australia and New Zealand, with frequent meetings, seminars and other professional development opportunities to improve their practice. Kumon’s Advanced Student Forums – held each year in November – also recognise the achievements of Kumon programme completers and those studying more than five years ahead of their school grade. Owning and operating a Kumon franchise is the perfect opportunity for people who love working with children, their community, and who want to make a difference by developing the skill of self-learning in students.
